The Application...
The City of Oxnard has a large number of process instrumentation that have LCD displays. Like a majority of our customers, these displays are exposed to direct sunlight from the day they are installed until the day they need to be replaced due to screen burnout. The instrument itself is still functional but is not manageable if the display no longer functions.
Have you ever tried to read an LCD display in the sun? It's nearly impossible without shading the screen in some way. Holding something up to provide shade while manipulating the screen menu's can be cumbersome and tiring depending on how in-depth the task is.
The Problem...
The client expressed the display burn-out issue while we were huddled around the display of a Krohne Magnetic Flowmeter, trying our best to read the screen while one of us tried to shade the converter. It can be a hassle to replace a screen on any equipment. If the screen can't be replaced then often times the entire instrument needs to be replaced which interrupts production and comes at a high cost.
The Solution...
AMS designed a sunshade that can be applied to a wide variety of industrial instrumentation that would protect instrument displays from harmful UV exposure while making the display easier to read and operate. We initially created a pipe-mount configuration for flowmeter applications. This shade can be adjusted to accommodate different meter lay lengths. The shade itself mounts directly to the existing bolts on the pipe flanges. The shade itself is fully adjustable and can be set at any angle to provide the best coverage for the instrument. We have optional angled louvers that can be attached to the front and/or back edge of the shade to add to the overall footprint of the shade.
Once we had constructed and installed the universal pipe mount shade successfully at the City of Oxnard facility, the customer suggested that we create one for their wall mounted instruments. We designed a simple yet highly effective sunshade that comes in two different sizes and can be mounted directly to a wall, fence, pipe or pretty much any other field mounted location. This type of shade can protect the LCD displays on a wide-variety of instruments such as gauges, switches, transmitters, etc.
